IG-Hawks hire Abrams as head coach/GM

The Trenton Golden Hawks didn't have to go far to find their next head coach/GM.

On Thursday, just a little over a week after after the departure of former head coach/GM Jerome Dupont,  the G-Hawks hired Marty Abrams to the dual position following his own resignation from arch-rival Wellington Dukes.

Abrams has spent 16 of the last 18 seasons with the Dukes from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2006 to 2017 following a two year stint from 2003 to 2005 with the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. During his time with the Dukes, Abrams was the epitome of Jr. A hockey success and longevity. As the bench boss, Abrams helped the Dukes win seven East division titles, two OJHL titles and two Dudley Hewitt Cup championships (2003 and 2011), appearing in a third Dudley Hewitt tournament in 2014 on home ice in Wellington. He will look to bring that same pedigree to the Golden Hawks organization and the city of Quinte West.

Abrams said he was excited for the new challenge in taking over a successful program in Trenton, but admitted it was a tough decision to leave a town and organization like Wellington where he had spent the large portion of his of his coaching career.

It was also announced at Thursday's press conference that Stirling native Todd Reid will be slotted in as one of Abrams' assistant coaches. Abrams and Reid have familiarity with each other from their days in Wellington, as they coached along side each other in the 2012-13 season. A second local assistant coach is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Dukes organization will be in search of a new head coach/GM for the first time in 12 years. Owner Michael Mulvihill says it was a bit of a shock to see Abrams leave and says it's too early to talk about a replacement.

He adds that he expects interest in the position will he high, but that it's too early to tell if it will be one person or two to fill the roles.

The Golden Hawks organization would like to welcome Abrams to the club and look forward to the offseason and the 2017-18 season ahead.
